in der zweiten hälfte januar hab ich besuch bekommen, meine tochter simone und ihr freund kevin, haben nach einem 3-monatigen südostasientrip einen finalen stop in thailand eingelegt. bei simone's erstem thailandbesuch anno '08 hatt ich ihr schon einen ritt auf einem elefanten versprochen. jedoch, obwohl es ja nicht an elefanten mangelt, waren wir damals jeweils zur falschen zeit am falschen ort. drum wurde es nun höchste zeit, dies nachzuholen…  auf unsrem programm standen ein paar tage bangkok, plus ne woche ko chang. da auf der 'elefanten insel' jedoch keine solchen anzutreffen sind, war guter rat teuer… wir sind dann fündig geworden mit dem elephant village bei sai yok in der nähe von kanchanaburi, am river kwae. von bkk aus war das grad als tagestrip machbar. da der minibus irgendwo an einer gesperrten kreuzung in bangkok hängengeblieben ist, wurden wir im privat-pw schnell nach kanchanaburi befördert, von wo aus wir dann zwei motorroller schnappten… und so wurde simone's langehegter wunsch wirklichkeit, zeitweise durften wir die urwaldriesen gar, ganz ohne 'chauffeur', selber durch den wald dirigieren...

my reports are a bit delayed this year, i'm sorry for the bad internet connections...

in the second half of january, my daughter simone and her boyfriend, kevin, visited me, after a 3-months trip throughout southeast asia. since her latest thailand visit, i promised her to ride the elephants, but then, we always were at the wrong place, at wrong time, and even when there are a lot of elephants in thailand, we couldn't meet them. time to fulfill it now… our program was to spend some days in bangkok and a week at koh chang. but, on 'elephant island' there aren't any of them, so where to find? yeah, we found them! the elephant village in sai yok at the kwae river, near kanchanaburi, possible to go there for a daily trip. then our minibus was blocked somewhere at a closed street crossing in bkk, so we got a private car which brings us comfortably to kanchanaburi, from where we rented two motorbikes… and simone's long awaited wish came true, we could ride the jungle giants, and at some parts of the trip, we got the chance to direct them through the forest just without a 'driver'...

erotik-thaimassage, etwas anders, als man sich das im allgemeinen vorstellt… ;-) es gab dann sogar noch ein schmatzendes rüssel-küssli… ehrlich gesagt, ich wusste da nicht, worauf ich mich einliess, als sie einen freiwilligen im publikum gesucht haben…

auf'm rückweg sind wir dann an diesem tor vorbeigekommen, da mussten wir natürlich einen zusätzlichen halt einlegen: der berühmt berüchtigte tiger temple 'wat pa luang tabua', wo tiger wie harmlose miezekätzchen gehalten werden…

ganz schön mutig, nicht? der eindruck wird schnell relativiert, wenn man im bericht etwas weiter runter scrollt…

ob die tiger mit irgendwelchen drogen ruhiggestellt werden, entzieht sich meiner kenntnis, habe aber den eindruck und das gefühl, dass das enorme zutrauen eher darauf basiert, dass all diese tiger von klein auf mit der nähe von menschen aufgewachsen sind. und, ganz einfach frei bewegen zwischen den tieren darf man sich dann doch nicht, jeder besucher, der in die nähe eines tieres geht, wird von einem erfahrenen pfleger an der hand geführt, schnelle bewegungen oder annäherungen von vorne, sich niederkauern, etc, sind strikte untersagt, ebenso wie blitzlichtfotos oder das mitführen von handgepäck…

wenn man die hochsicherheitstrakte, in denen die tiger untergebracht sind, betrachtet, wird auch schnell klar, dass die sicherheitsaspekte nicht einfach auf die leichte schulter genommen werden. seit der tiger tempel weltweit in den medien beachtet wird, hat sich das ganze zu einem riesigen rummelfeld entwickelt. busse transportieren die besucher mittlerweile in riesigen mengen an. aus der ursprünglich guten idee, den tieren, die in der freien wildbahn in thailand keine chance mehr auf ein überleben haben, ein zuhause zu geben, hat sich nun ein riesiger zirkus entwickelt. wenn's keine tiger wären, könnte man fast sagen: 'ein affentheater'...

if the tigers get calmed down with any drugs, i don't know it. but i think that this enormeous trust is based on the fact, that all these tigers are grown up as babies with direct, near contact to the people. and, even when it looks like, the visitors cannot move freely between the animals without careful security control. need to hold the hand of a guard, no fast moves, no crouching or walking in front of the tiger's face, no flashlight pics, no handbags, et al…

if you see the security walls around the animals enclosures, it seems clear that there are security aspects. since this temple hits the attraction in media worldwide, it grows to a big bustle. busses bring the visitors in rough masses. originally a good idea, to safe the animals, which today in wildlife have no chance to survive, and give them a home, is growing meanwhile to a big circus, if they would not be tigers, you could say: a big 'monkey business'...

kleine, delikate anmerkung zum schluss: jeder besucher muss sein 'ticket' (500baht) unterschreiben und deponieren. was aber nur die allerwenigsten wissen, mal abgesehen von den eher wenigen thailändischen besuchern: dieses 'ticket' ist eine haftungsausschlusserklärung, zur absicherung, sollte ein 'unfall' geschehen, sind die betreiber der anlage aus dem schneider… (ich persönlich find das ganz gut so - sensationsgeilheit darf ruhig auf eigene verantwortung erlebt werden! …und die dummheit, etwas zu unterschreiben, das man nicht lesen kann, ebenfalls...)

small, delicate side notice: every visitor have to sign his 'ticket' (500baht) and deposit it by the entrance. what just a few of them know, beside of the few thai visitors, is the fact, that this 'ticket' is a non-liability assertion. if ever something will happen, the temple is not responsible for it…

(me personally i think, this is a good idea - the kick for sensation should be on own risk! …and 'same same' with the stupidity of signing a paper without interest of knowing what is written on it...)

wettbewerbsfrage zum schluss: was ist das? (zu gewinnen gibts nix -ausser weiterbildung- und aufgelöst wird das rätsel erst, wenn jemand die richtige antwort abliefert… oder ich die lösung selbst gefunden hab, ich weiss es nämlich zur zeit auch noch nicht… hehe)

zeltlager auf der rama viii bridge?

die berichterstattung in den europäischen medien zu den ereignissen in bangkok ist etwas dürftig und einseitig. wenn nicht grad etwas gewalt aufflammt, interessiert das halt zuwenig. 

die ausgangslage ist bekannt, seit einigen jahren ist das land gespalten in rot und gelb, respektive in anhänger und gegner der familie des ehemaligen ministerpräsidenten thaksin shinawatra, welcher noch 8 jahre nach seiner verbannung aus der regierung, von dubai aus, die strippen zieht und das volk gegeneinander aufhetzt. durch geschickte schachzüge wurde seine schwester yingluck (übername 'die krabbe') ins höchste amt gewählt, die im letzten oktober ein amnestiegesetz für politische straftäter durchbringen wollte, um ihren bruder straffrei nach thailand zurückzuholen. und daran haben sich die die neuerlichen konflikte entzündet. seit dem 13.januar ist bangkok im ausnahmezustand. wer aber nun an unruhen und chaos denkt, liegt völlig falsch. gleich an 7 wichtigen knotenpunkten der stadt, inmitten riesiger strassenkreuzungen, wurden bühnen, marktstrassen und zeltlager errichtet, zehntausende nahmen an den verschiedenen, hauptsächlich friedlich verlaufenden happenings teil. die stimmung erinnert mehr an open air festivals, denn an politische grabenkämpfe…ob diese demonstrationen zu einer politischen lösung beitragen, bezweifle ich sehr, habe eher das gefühl, dass die so schon festgefahrene situation noch erstarrt wird, jedoch haben sie auf der ökologischen ebene wunder vollbracht: wo ansonsten tag für tag hunderttausende autos die stadt vergiften, campiert das volk und zelebriert lebensfreude. in all den jahren kam man nie so schnell und locker durch die stadt, die meisten lassen ihre vehikel nun zuhaus, die strassen sind beinahe leer, skytrain, subway, river- und khlong (kanal) -boote total überfüllt. sogar thais benutzen nun ihre velos. 

leider, aber auch fast logisch, ziehen solche aktionen immer auch störenfriede an, gruppierungen die an einer destabilisation interessiert sind, und immer mal wieder zu gewalttätigen aktionen neigen. rot und gelb schieben sich dabei gegenseitig die verantwortung dafür zu...

bei uns wäre eine politische aktion in diesem ausmass völlig undenkbar, es würde unweigerlich in kürze in gewalt und chaos, wohl sogar in bürgerkriegsähnliche zustände ausarten. man stelle sich nur mal vor, in zürich würden über nacht hardbrücke, bahnhofstrasse, central, bellevue und weitere zentrale punkte gesperrt und eingenommen… und die polizei hilft dabei mit, dass alles möglichst friedlich verläuft… undenkbar!

die thais aber nehmen das ziemlich gelassen, jedoch, nach wochen ausnahmezustand, spürt man schon hier und da etwas nervosität. viele geschäfte stehen vor dem ruin, andere (strassenhändler) machen ihr geschäft des lebens...

da ich mich nun seit mehr als zwei wochen auf meine einsame insel zurückgezogen habe, kenn ich die aktuelle situation nicht so genau, abgesehn davon dass die wahlen eine neuerliche pattsituation erbracht haben und nachwahlen bedingen… aber so schnell wird sich hier nichts ändern...

ob die strassen noch immer alle besetzt sind, entzieht sich meiner kenntnis, der atemluft in der stadt wär's zu wünschen…

tent camps at rama viii bridge?

the reports in european newspapers are a bit poorly and one-sided. if there's not just any incident, it is not of interest.

the situation is known, since years the country is aparted in red and yellow, or in other words, in followers and opponents of the family of former prime minister thaksin shinawatra, who, still 8 years after banning from politics and country, from dubai, draws the stripes and heat up and instigate the people against each other. with tricky 'chess moves' his sister yingluck (nickname 'the crab') was installed as prime minister. she wanted to bring a new law about amnesty for political offenders, just to bring her brother back in the country. and there the fire starts again burning…

since 13th of jan bangkok is in a state of emergency. but who is thinking of riots and chaos, is wrong. at 7 different important traffic points in the city, overnight they built stages, tent camps and market roads, where tenthousands of people gather since in a mostly peaceful way. the mood reminds more as to be at a music open air festival, than at political demonstrations… wheter these demonstrations bring a political solution, i'm in doubt seriously, i think, the blocked situation will just get more frozen with it, but: on the ecological aspect, there's the real profit from it. at places where otherwise everyday houndred of thousands of vehicels are driving, there are camps, full of people who gather together in a very peaceful way, to celebrate joy and happiness…

all the years i visited bkk, it was never easier and faster to get through the traffic. and the air was never so less poisened as now. most of the people leave their cars at home, the streets are nearby empty, but skytrain, subway and the boats on river and khlongs (canals) are overfilled… even the thais start driving their bycicles now…

sadly, but somehow logically, there are some black sheeps, who want to 'profit' from the situation and destabilizing the peaceful situation with destortion and terror. both, red and yellow, see the responibility for these incidents on the others side…

but all in all, demonstrations or actions in this huge amount would be totally impossible in our countries, and would lead instantly to chaos and civil war. imagine all the central points (of traffic and economy) of a european metropole would be occupied over night, and the police helps to keep it peaceful…

but time will make the situation now more nervous, since the business in recent shops around the spots got down (whilst street vendors make their business of lthe life)

since i'm isolated on my lonely island for about 2 weeks, i don't know the actual situation in bkk, excerpt that the elections did not bring any winner and must be repeated later. if the streets, all of them, still are occupied, i don't know… but i would wish it, at least for the breathing air...

entschuldigt bitte die verzögerung meiner mails, obwohl mein airstick-internet abo 'schneller' und teurer geworden ist, letztendlich ist die verbindung, ausserhalb der zivilisation, noch schlechter als bisher. inzwischen hab ich mich längst auf meine einsame insel zurückgezogen, aber erstmal ein paar visuelle impressionen 'from home', von anfang januar...

nicht allzuweit von zuhause, bei chayaphum, gibts einige landschaftliche schönheiten zu entdecken. vom tha ton wasserfall hab ich schon früher berichtet, hier ein paar bilder von 'stonehenge thailand', wie diese kalkstein-formation auch genannt wird. der korrekte name aber lautet 'mor hin khao', was so ungefähr 'die weissen felsen' bedeutet. 

die gegend hier wird auch immer wieder gerne für thai-filmaufnahmen besucht, zuletzt im 2.teil des history-epos 'king naresuan', deren ersten beiden teile auch im westen unter dem namen 'the kingdom of war' vertrieben werden. empfehlenswert für alle, die sich für die thailändische geschichte interessieren...

sorry for the delay of my reports, even when i bought a 'faster' and more expensive airstick-internet abo, in fact its much slower, at least far from civilisation. meanwhile i'm on my lonely island since a while, but first some impressions 'from home' from beginning of january…

not far from our home village, in the area of chayaphum, there are some beautiful landscapes and sites to explore. i already has shown some pics from tha ton waterfall, and not far from it, there's 'stonehenge thailand' how this limestone formations also are called ironically, the real name's 'mor hin khao' which means something like 'white stones'. the area here is somtimes visited and used for thai films, one of the last was the 2nd part of 'king naresuan', a huge history epos, which is also released in the west under the name 'the kingdom of war'. recommended, if you're interested in thai history.
